Finding the right senior living option for a parent can feel overwhelming. You may be comparing assisted living, nursing homes, memory care, independent living, and retirement communities while also handling estate planning, wills, powers of attorney, and the preparation and sale of a home. The good news is that you do not have to navigate every decision alone.

An Aging Life Care Manager can assess your family’s needs, explain available care options, and help you determine the next steps. Some work for nonprofit organizations. To learn more and find services in your area, visit the Aging Life Care Association.

Other professionals in your community may also be able to help. Seniors Real Estate Specialists and Certified Senior Housing Professionals are trained to address housing and real estate needs that often arise during a senior move; use their Seniors Real Estate Specialist directory and Certified Senior Housing Professional directory to find a professional near you. Elder law attorneys can assist older adults and their families with legal and estate matters.

Senior move managers like me help older adults and their families manage the practical details of a move. We can help sort and downsize belongings, pack, coordinate with movers, unpack, and resettle the new home—or provide only the services your family needs. Having one person coordinate these tasks can reduce much of the stress of moving.

Local agencies and community organizations may offer additional programs, referrals, and resources for seniors and their families. Search for your city or county’s senior services, area agency on aging, or community resource center to identify help nearby.
